2016-17 Skilled Occupations List Changes Announced
The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has released the new Skilled Occupations List (SOL) and Consolidation Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL) for 2016-17.
The SOL identifies occupations that would benefit from skilled migration for the purpose of meeting the medium to long-term skill needs of the Australian economy, where such needs may not be more appropriately met by sponsored migration programs or up-skilling Australians.
The composition of the SOL is reviewed annually.
Any changes to the SOL for 2016-17 will come into effect on 1 July 2016.
Skilled Occupations List
The SOL is used for Skilled Independent Subclass 189 Visa, the Skilled Regional Provisional Subclass 489 Visa (Family Sponsored) and the Graduate Temporary Subclass 485 visa.
The following occupations have been removed from the SOL, effective 1 July 2016:
- Dental Hygienist (411211)
- Dental Prosthetist (411212)
- Dental Technician (411213)
- Dental Therapist (411214)
- OH & S Advisor (251312)
- Mining Engineer (233611)
- Petroleum engineer (233612)
- Environmental health officer (251311)
- Metallurgist (234912)
Added occupations from the SOL include:
- Audiologist (252711)
- Orthotist or prosthetist (251912)
Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List
The CSOL applies to the Employer Nomination Scheme, State Sponsored Migration, Temporary Business Long Stay (457), and Training and Research Visa.
The following occupations have been removed from the CSOL, effective 1 July 2016:
- Motor Mechanic (general)
- Diesel Motor Mechanic (321212)
- Small Engine Mechanic (321214)
- Welder (first class) (322313)
- Metal Fabricator (322311)
- Panel beater (324111)
In March 2016, the most in-demand jobs were:
- Developer programmer
- Chef (excluding take-away cooks)
- Café or restaurant manager
- Marketing specialist
- ICT business analyst
